Mountain Building: BLOCK 15

Southern California is MOUNTAINS

Simi Valley from Rocky Peak
Simi Valley lies within the Transverse Ranges of mountains. The Transverse Ranges are a unique set of mountain ranges in California. They run west to east, as opposed to the rest of California’s ranges that run north to south. These mountain ranges run from Santa Barbara County into San Bernardino County. They derive the name Transverse Ranges due to their East-West orientation, making them transverse to the general North-South orientation of most of California's coastal mountain ranges.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Watch each of the videos shown below. Write a summary of each of them, being sure to discuss the primary topic of each one. Include and highlight the most important vocabulary in the video.

2. Complete Sections 11.1 through 11.3 and the WordWise exercise on page 86 of the Guided Reading and Study Workbook.

By the way, even if you choose one of the other options, you may find the videos below quite interesting.

OR, AS AN OPTION...
Watch this Hiking Safety Video, then take a hike in any of the southern California mountain ranges. Rocky Peak would be a close-by choice. Document your hike with photographs and keep a written record of interesting observations.
Here are some important factors to follow.
1. Do this only with the permission of your parents (unless you are 18)
2. Do not go alone
3. Make logical and safe decisions

OR, AS AN OPTION...

Download the pdf which is A Geologic Profile of Simi Valley, read it and then write a summary of the article, especially identifying the most interesting sections.
